Sweet Doggie Misses You Too!

Does your dog exhibit some unlikely behavior lately? He becomes raucous on everything especially furniture, he tumbles the trash cans, gnaws on shoes, madly barks and howls when he doesn’t see you, and when you come home, he seems really upset. There could be many things to account these behavioral problems. But the most probable cause is boredom and loneliness—and he misses you too much! This is most frequently the case if you only have one dog left alone at home when you are out.

Perhaps it makes you feel bad that your doggie feels this way. So here are basic solutions you may want to try. First, keep him entertained. With something to toy with such as a bone or Kong chew toy, his attention diverts from feeling lonely to engaging in the challenge. You can find other pet products that will entertain him. Another is turning on the radio so that he hears human voices to reassure human presence. Or better yet, place a worn shirt on his bed because with your smell lingering, he will think you are just around.

There were those cases wherein your dog missing you too much resorts to destructive behavior. Sometimes he chews furniture or ruins your belongings. When this happens, be alert! Immediately correct your dog the instant you caught him because he will understand easily rather than after few minute lapse. Rush to his side and grab him by the back while you tightly say “No!”

This way, he will realize he has done wrong. But if he does it time and again, some handlers prefer a soft slap on the thigh using rolled newspaper. It won’t hurt but the sound is enough to threaten him.

Dogs are like humans who undergo emotional distresses. Dog care is important so avoid this by showing acknowledgement. Help him stay up by cuddling and hugging him. Dogs are social animals and mere feeding and walking them are not enough. If you have the money, why not have another pet so that he has someone to play with or take him out for a dog travel. But if it is not a good option for you, might as well spend time bonding together in an obedience class. You will not only learn extra tips for control and teamwork involving your pet but he too gets the chance to socialize with other pets. Just take it easy and you will later observe his excitement for the next class!
