Lisbon in Love
Portugal's capital has a slow-paced, laidback feel that is perfect for a budget romantic weekend away. Its vibrant nightlife and untouched historical landscape of art nouveau buildings ensure Lisbon's blend of the cosmopolitan and the rustically romantic is sensitively maintained.

Alfama

Lisbon's oldest district, this gem of a place was one of the few cityscapes untainted by the 18th century earthquake and has remained pretty much the same since. Its narrow streets and winding alleyways are serviced by an ancient tram system that transports visitors to a time far removed from modern concerns.

Travelers can explore this timeless hideaway on foot and get lost in the strange little world, where local restaurants and bars are cheap, plentiful and welcoming. The area is also home to a number of the best Lisbon hostels. A map might be useful, though, as hidden away down the narrow winding streets, they can be decidedly tricky to find!

Offering stunning city views, the 16th century castle of Soa Jorge is but one of many picturesque terraces from which visitors can plan the next part of their trip. Other highlights include the famous Lisbon Cathedral and Santa Engracia Church.

Bairro Alto

This centrally located hill district promises to take couples to the dizzying heights of romance in the most literal sense. Its small walkways become a veritable throng of atmospheric activity as the night sets in, and couples can slip in and out of bars and restaurants en route to the popular and romantic Fado clubs.

There is even an excellent opportunity to enjoy a private picnic at the Ajuda Botanic Gardens just outside of Bairro Alto. Dating back to the 18th century, a quite unusual blend of plant and tree species from across the globe create a harmonious and tranquil romantic retreat from the busy city streets.

By day, Bairro Alto takes on an entirely different character, its cobbled streets and quiet hideaway eateries and notable Convento do Carmo and Igreja de Sao Roque churches encouraging capricious romantic exploration. It’s time to get those Lisbon hostels maps out again, though – romantic it may be, but, as with the Alfama, finding where your accommodation is can be a bit of mission in itself!
