The Zone diet is a diet plan that pays close attention to food intake and physical exercise to achieve results. The theory of the diet looks at the influence of carbohydrates on the body's insulin levels. Consuming too many carbs causes the body's blood sugar levels to rise sharply, which in turn causes the body to release insulin, a hormone that lowers blood sugar levels by causing the sugar to be stored as fat. It is believed that by eating the right foods, blood sugar levels may be controlled to keep insulin levels in "the zone," a range where the body is thought to burn more fat and stop holding onto excessive fat.
The diet balances carbohydrate and protein consumption in a three to four ratio, meaning 30% of your calories will come from protein and 40% from carbohydrates (another 30% typically comes from fat). It is important to count calories on the Zone program, with most meals not exceeding five hundred calories each and snacks around one hundred calories each.
Under the diet program, you eat five times each day (three meals and two snacks), never going more than five hours without consuming food. If you sleep eight hours every night, this means having breakfast within one hour of getting out of bed, taking lunch within five hours of breakfast, a snack within five hours of your lunch, dinner within two to three hours of snack, and a final snack right before bedtime.
The majority of foods consumed on the Zone program include lean meats, like chicken or fish and other sources of protein, plenty of fruits and vegetables, and a limited amount of carbs. Cereals, rice, potatoes, sugar, and breads are the kinds of carbohydrate rich foods that dieters should avoid eating, but can enjoy occasionally. Dieters must also try not to eat pre-packaged foods and high sodium foods.
Exercise is another important part of the Zone diet. The plan suggests moderate intensity physical exercise for thirty minutes per day, six days a week. Physical activity is supposed to increase the effectiveness of the Zone program. Other things that are supposed to increase the effectiveness of the diet include taking vitamins and nutritional supplements.
The Zone plan is effective for many people, but it requires a lot of dedication. The reason why this diet and most other diet programs do not seem to work is because many dieters stop before they are able to see results. Many people struggle to stick with any type of diet because of cravings, uncontrollable appetites or eating habits, or a simple lack the motivation to lose weight.
