Viagra and Infertility

Viagra has long been prescribed as a miracle drug to treat the problems associated with erectile dysfunction and impotence in men. However, there have been conflicting reports on the usage of Viagra and its effects on fertility. Recent studies have been reported to show that Viagra can have damaging effects to sperm and cause infertility problems in otherwise healthy men. While these reports may be true, in some cases, the risks Viagra poses to a man’s fertility can be much less than the benefits is can cause for the same person’s chance at conceiving a child. Depending on the individual and their own medical issues, Viagra can actually help infertility, in a way. Much more research is needed on the subject to make a final determination, but these are the most recent studies, their results, and responses to the findings.

The British Study

In 2004, a British laboratory released the findings of a study that they had performed on the effects of Viagra on sperm. The company tested sperm samples from a number of patients at a fertility clinic with Viagra. The dosages used on the tested sperm were similar to the amount that would reach the sperm when a Viagra user would take a 100-milligram dose. They then noted changes in the sperm and their activities and function levels over a period of time. This was a follow up to a previous study, which looked at the number of embryos created by male lab mice treated with Viagra and those who were not given the drug.

The findings of the research showed that in the sperm samples that were tested, the sperm that was treated with Viagra was significantly more active at an earlier stage than sperm left untreated. Researchers concluded that this could cause the sperm to cease activity before an egg is fertilized. The portion of the study performed on mice was said to show a decreased number of embryos in the group treated with Viagra versus the control group. These combined findings caused them to conclude that Viagra can, indeed, cause male infertility in some users.

Pfizer’s Response

A spokesperson from Pfizer, the company that created and manufactures Viagra gave little merit to the findings of this study. They stated that much more research needed to be done on humans before serious warnings should be issued about the effects of Viagra on male fertility. Pfizer also noted that the purpose of Viagra is to treat erectile dysfunction and, if the risks were found true, the drug would still provide users who wanted the chance to father children naturally a better chance than without taking the drug. Without the drug, invasive and impersonal fertility treatments may be the patient’s only option for fatherhood. Pfizer was also quick to point out that the vast majority of their users are older men, with impotence issues. Most of these men are not looking to father children or add to their families at this stage in life.

An independent researcher also stated that the findings could be somewhat skewed. A scientist stated that the conditions in a lab setting are far removed from those in the human body. This could cause a completely different reaction of the sperm to Viagra outside the body than within. He also suggested that further study be done on the effects of Viagra on human sperm in a clinical trial, or similar study, before deciding the real effects of the drug on active sperm.

One of the most important things to note about Viagra and its effects on fertility is the fact that the drug is to be used on those who have a specific medical ailment. Those who choose to use Viagra recreationally and for non-medical reasons are taking this drug at their own risk. No one should take Viagra without a prescription from an accredited doctor or physician. Viagra should be used only for its medically intended purpose, which is to treat erectile dysfunction and impotence, never for drug experimentation and recreational uses. For those with medical conditions, Viagra has been a find that has improved their quality of life and possibly given them a chance to have a family naturally.
