"Personal Statement"

I am a biology and chemistry major with a minor in math. At the age of 12, I became very interested in science after my father was in a car accident. As a result of this, he suffered traumatic brain and neck injury (no paralysis). Prior to his accident he worked as a school psychologist with a private practice on the side. I guess science and medicine runs in the family, although his field was psychology. He suffered a seizure disorder and was no longer able to work. It took many years for the doctors to stabilize his condition and form a diagnoses.
I am presently doing research with y biology professor on host pathogen interactions, and I am presently doing my own independent study on pathogens. I would like to study biology/neurobiology in graduate school then go to medical school. I have an overall 3.6 grade point average, but my weakness is in writing My joint research with my biology professor and my individual project on pathogen interaction has influenced my career choice as a neurosurgeon. It has made my studies feel worth it. My project is on a host and its optimal fitness (reproductive success) when there is a parasite present. I also am studying the relationship between humans and the pathogen Entameoba Histolytica. How they react with each other will be the focus of my independent research. I intend to discover what fitness level and virulence the hosts, humans, will be at when the pathogen, Entameoba Histolytica, is present. Ebert and Hamilton mentioned in Combes 2001, ?The resulting parasite induced loss of fitness is virulence.? The parasite is at zero fitness alone and it increases its fitness as it transmits into different hosts. Although the pathogen does not care what happens to the host due to its presence, the parasite needs the host to stay alive and reproduce. The two must be able to find an optimal virulence in which to coincide, and I intend to show how the two interact with each other.
Graduate study is what I need to become a neurosurgeon, and this program will help get me to where I need to be. I have amazing strengths in this field of study and it can help me overcome my weakness in writing, because I must be prepared to accurately report my research and put into words what I have done and plan to do. I know graduate school will be a lot of work but Alistair Cooke Once said, ?A professional is someone who can do his best work even when he does not feel like it.? This project, like graduate school will be, has been a lot of work. I have put a lot of time and dedication into my research, and I will put even more into graduate school if I am given the chance.
